ZEDCON WS2812/SK6812 LED Controller

Today we show you our newest product: The Zedcon LED Controller. It will be available soon and we want to introduce it here in advance. 

The ZEDCON from Zedfy is a controller which supports the control of intelligent LEDs of type WS2812b. LED strips or LED arrays can be connected to four outputs and controlled with 12 different effects. The configuration is done from a smartphone into an app, which is connected to the controller via Bluetooth. Some of these effects can be influenced by audio signals. A microphone is built in for this purpose. But also, the direct connection of a sound source with jack plug is provided.

Connection of an LED strip

For a first start-up we want to connect an LED strip with 60 LEDs. Since the connector of the LED-strip cannot be connected directly to the output of ZEDCON, a connector cable is required.

At one end, this cable has the matching plug for the ZEDCON and at the other end a female connector that fits most LED strips.

The power supply must always be selected to match the respective LEDs. Because the LEDs receive their power supply directly and not through Zedcon, it is possible to control a much higher number of LED pixels than with other low budget controllers. The Zedcon can control up to 32000 pixels. The FPS (frames per second) are automatically adjusted by the processor. The higher the number of pixels, the lower the used FPS rate.

Our LED strip has two extra connections for ground and power supply. In case of long LED strips, it may also be necessary to connect them to the external power supply at both ends to reduce the voltage drop on the LED strip.

The ZEDCON itself also obtains its supply voltage from the external power supply unit. Voltages between 5 and 12 V are allowed. Before connecting the LED strip to the ZEDCON, it is absolutely necessary to check whether the pin assignment of the LED strip and the ZEDCON match.

It may be necessary to swap pins in the connector of the LED Strip.

When connected, it looks like this. The luster terminal, bottom left, is the connection to the external power supply.


For the configuration, we need a smartphone. Android or IPhone. The app for configuration can be downloaded for free.





After the app has been installed (access to the site is always necessary if Bluetooth is to be used.), we should power the LED strip connected to ZEDCON via the external power supply. This will also give the ZEDCON its supply voltage and it can start. The LED-Strip will display a random pattern or remain dark. 

Now we can start the app. On the first screen we should see an entry "Zedcon" which corresponds to the Bluetooth device we found. If this entry does not appear, the ZEDCON has no power supply or Bluetooth is not working.

We mark this entry and click on "CONFIGURE". A new window will open. In this window, click on the four small rectangles in the lower left corner to select the output we want to configure. We mark the output 1 and unmark all other outputs. The selection is confirmed by clicking on "OK". All the changes we make now take effect for Output 1 only. 

In the next step, we must make a few basic settings. To do this, we click on the slider symbol at the bottom right. The window for the basic settings opens.

At "PIXEL (GROUP) AMOUNT" we have to specify the number of LEDs in our LED-Strip. At "PIXEL HEIGHT" we enter 1. The last important setting is "COLOR ORDER", which indicates the color sequence. So for our strip the GRBW is green, red, blue, white, because the strip has LEDs with additional white LED.

If the type or the color sequence is not known, here are tips to find the correct setting. 

First, the LED type. If you look closely at the LEDs, the type is easy to recognize. The LED shown on the left is an RGB LED without additional white LED. On the right side, however, you can clearly see the white LED in the upper half, which looks yellow in the inactive state.

To find out the right order, we try to set any order for the right LED type. Then we leave the basic setting and select the BASIC mode with the button in the bottom middle. Here we can now select different colors and observe the LED strip. You should at least try red, green and blue. If the colors match, the setting was correct. But if red appears at blue and blue at red, then red and blue must be swapped in the color sequence. 

And finally, a rainbow

Now we want to set the "RAINBOW" effect. To do this, we click again on the blue button in the bottom center and select "RAINBOW". The window for the rainbow settings appears.

With "COLOR TIME" you can adjust how fast the colors change. If "SCALE" is off, the whole rainbow is displayed on the LED strip. If "SCALE" is switched on, only a moving part is displayed.

So that you can get a better picture of the possibilities of Zedcon we will shortly also introduce a video to the Zedcon.

@Ingo Danke für dein Feedback. Der Ansatz war es mit der App dem User der eben nicht Programmieren kann ein Interface zur Verfügung zu stellen mit dem er jede Menge machen kann. Thema selbst Lichteffekte auf den Zedcon übertragen werden wir in der nächsten Woche vorstellen. Das ist schon integriert. Thema Smarthome: Weiterentwicklung Richtung Sprachsteuerung steht auf der Agenda. LG

@ Bernd: Das Labornetzteil ist Marke Eigenbau von Gerald Lechner.
@ Dave: Das ist richtig. Aber der ZEDCON kann auch SK6812RGBW. Dieser Typ LED hat im Prinzip dasselbe Protokoll für die Ansteuerung.
@ Ingo: Der Hersteller befürchtet, dass sein Produkt sehr schnell von Konkurrenten nachgebaut wird, deswegen sehen wir zumindest in nächster Zeit keine Chance, eine Open Source Variante zu bekommen.

Muy interesante, buena opción para ambientar una zona en verano para estar disfrutando de la noche con musica chill-out o para fiestas para niños. La configuración y ajustes parecen muy fáciles.



Spannend! aber nur wirklich interessesant, wenn der Controller auch anders angesteuert werden kann, als immer diese proprietären Apps. Man will das ja zumeist in das Smart-Home integrieren. Gibt es da also ein Webservice u.ä.?



kann es sein, dass es sich bei den LED’s mit weißem LED-Halbmond nicht um WS2812B, sondern um SK6812RGBW handelt?



cooler Artikel, Frage: Gibt es zu den Labornetzteil evlt. eine Anleitung wie Ihr das gebaut habt?
