Hello and welcome to today's blog post.
The ESP32 is the successor to the popular ESP8266. We offer it in different versions, from the miniature version that only Processor + Mini antennaconsists of the breadboard friendly Develoment Boardup toNodeMCU ESP32 with OLED display.
The ESP32 offers some improvements compared to the ESP8266. In addition to the addition of computing power and memory, and improved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 support, the ESP32 offers a variety of integrated sensors (hall, temperature, touch and pulse).
Anyone who has already started an ESP32 knows the problem: the setup, as described in our eBook, requires downloading the Arduino Core files manually. These must then be unpacked and copied into a self-created folder "..\Arduino\hardware\espressif\esp32". Then the "get.exe" file must be executed in the "tools" subfolder.
The good news is that recently we can skip this step and install the required files via the board administrator.
If you, like me, have already installed ESP32 support, a couple of preparatory steps are needed first. If not, you can skip the first step.
Close the Arduino IDE.
Change to your Arduino folder ("C:\Users\<name>\Documents\Arduino\hardware\espressif"). This should be the folder "esp32".
Delete the folder "esp32".
After a restart of the Arduino IDE all boards with ESP32 have now disappeared from the board administrator.
2. Add Board Manager URL
Open the default settings under "File" > "Defaults". Now click on the icon on the right next to the "Additional Board Manager URLs" entry field.
A window is now opening by adding the link to the board administrator URL. The link is:
We confirm the entry by clicking on "OK" and also close the default settings by clicking on "OK".
Three. Install via the board administrator
As a final step we now open the board administrator via "tools" > "board" > "board administrator".
When we enter "esp32" in the search box, an entry of the Express Systems we select should appear and install by clicking on the corresponding button.
All required files will now be downloaded and installed.
From now on, the ESP32 modules are available in the board administrator. And if an update becomes available, you can simply install it with a click.
I hope today's blog post was useful to you. Of course we will update the eBook to ESP32 shortly.
Your Markus Neumann
